With the freedom to travel comes a responsibility to the people we visit whether trekking in the world’s mountain ranges or travelling through Asia on a gap year. ‘Community Tourism’ is about tourism that benefits local people. It aims to include and benefit local communities, particularly indigenous peoples and villagers in the rural South (i.e. ‘developing world’). For instance, villagers might host tourists in their village, managing the scheme communally and sharing the profits. There are many types of community tourism project, including many in which the ‘community’ works with a commercial tour operator, but all community tourism projects should give local people a fair share of the benefits/profits and a say in deciding how incoming tourism is managed.

Could you run, walk and cycle 800 km in just five days?
This October, Dublin-based specialist travel company, Follow The Camino, is setting a challenge to all its staff to run, walk and cycle 800 kilometres along the French Way of the Camino from the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela and inviting everyone to get involved.

Start your expedition journey with the RGS
Geography Outdoors, at the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) with IBG, is a great resource supporting field research, exploration and outdoor learning This year, the annual Explore expedition and fieldwork planning weekend (18-20 November) will be kicked off by the Atlantic Rising team, winners of the RGS-IBG Land Rover ‘Go Beyond’ Bursary. The team travelled around the edge of the Atlantic documenting the effects of sea level rise on coastal communities and will be sharing their stories in an inspiring opening lecture on Friday evening.

Eco-Adventurers Recycled World Expedition
A recycled truck made from trash and powered by restaurant scraps arrived back in the UK this month after a two year around-the-world adventure travel. Andy Pag (36, London UK) and Christina Ammon (36, Oregon USA) have driven their ‘Biotruck’ fuelled by used cooking oil which they scavenged from fryers along their 30,000km planet-circling tour across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas.
