Adventure Travel Overlanding Tips

  • Plan your expenses carefully; it makes sense to come up with a weekly budget and aim to stick to it. Be realistic as there’s no point in setting budgets that are impossible to maintain in reality. Take everything into account from transport and living expenses to visas and health care. On the other hand, stash some cash and keep your fingers crossed!
  • Choose a route at home but, no matter how well it’s been researched, do not stick to it rigidly. Be prepared to be flexible, adapting plans in light of information picked up from other travellers.
  • It you’re travelling using your on transport, then brush up on your mechanical knowledge, carry key spares/tools and make regular checks to keep the wheels turning.
  • Aim to arrange as many visas as possible before you set off. At border posts, try to be amiable in the face of bureaucracy, indifference and delay rather than losing your temper – it’ll get you nowhere.
  • Be aware of your personal security and that of your transport but don’t spoil the travel experience by letting anxieties overwhelm adventure. It makes sense, though, to carry photocopies of key document and carry them separately as well as splitting money and cards rather than keeping them all together. A ‘decoy’ wallet or purse with several local currency notes, a couple of out-of-date credit cards, photos, etc, is no loss when you have to give it up in a dodgy situation.
  • Although freedom and adventure are core motivations for trips, try to stay in touch with family and friends when you can; there is no shortage of modern electronic gadgets and software to stay in touch without much effort.
